North Wing – Lavatory Refurbishment

One of the completed phase work is the new lavatories renovation of North wing, which is featured with Zig-Zag design connecting through the internal space. While balancing between asthetic and functional purposes, the one-stop services concept is dedicated to providing a smooth and convenient routine for users. Trend plaza is one of the leading shopping arcades in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, which receives 150,000 daily visitors and serves the daily needs for the neighbourhood. For image upgrading of the shopping arcade, lavatory renovation and high hygiene standard are key elements to keep customers happy and enhance their shopping experience for repeat visits. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic not only raised the public awareness of new hygiene requirements but also enlightened designers on new approaches for commercial lavatory design.

Island of Success

The new lavatory design features a successful all-in-one sanitary island concept. The “island” concept allows sufficient social distancing among users whereas the “all-in-one” concept facilitates smooth arrangement and management of various sanitary provisions.

The independent basin islands provide a loop concept for circulation flow. Compared with the ordinary single row washing station, this boundary less design enhanced the routing flexibility and fluidity of users. Small details also go to the rotated island orientation which is designed to maximize the social distancing among users. By entering each basin island, users can enjoy one-stop services for all sanitary provisions they need, including washing basin, sensor faucet, sensor soap dispenser, sensor hand dryer, paper towel dispenser and disposal bins. These touchless technologies also highlight the new user experience.

The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has brought us into a new era of shopping mall experience. High standard of hygiene plays an extremely important role in image upgrade, thus, Island of Sanitary Provision will undoubtedly signify an island of success.
